SACRAMENTO – The California Technology Agency today announced the appointment of Kari Gutierrez as the first-ever Assistant Secretary for Professional Development.

A skilled information technology (IT) workforce is critical to the state’s ability to deliver services and information to Californians efficiently and effectively.  The California Technology Agency is committed to putting in place the building blocks for ensuring that the state workforce has the capacity to achieve this important goal.  The establishment of the Office of Professional Development and today’s appointment of Kari Gutierrez to lead the office, will accelerate California’s IT workforce initiatives.

Kari has extensive IT experience, having served the state of California for 33 years in various technical and management positions.  Since 2008, she has served as the Chief of the Enterprise Technology Investment Division at the Department of Transportation.  In this position, she led the department’s IT projects, enterprise project portfolio management and enterprise architecture.  From 2008 and 2009, she also served as the Department of Transportation’s Acting Chief Information Officer.

As Assistant Secretary for Professional Development, Kari will be responsible for the recruitment, development and retention of a dynamic workforce to support the ever changing demands of IT.  She will use her breadth of IT experience to address the complexities and challenges associated with implementing and managing technology.

Kari takes office on April 16, 2012.
