The recent earthquake in Haiti has opened the door again for those unsavory characters who use tragedy to dupe, deceive, and otherwise take advantage of the naïve and unwary. While the massive disaster recovery and relief efforts have generated many legitimate and worthy charitable organizations seeking donations for their humanitarian efforts, the cyber-criminal element is also using the disaster as an opportunity to circulate email scams.
The U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) has issued a warning regarding e-mail scams that might contain links or attachments that direct people wanting to help to phishing or other malicious software websites. Read more
