For the second consecutive year, California has been honored with a “Sunny Award” by the Sunshine Review for having one of the most effective government websites in the nation for promoting government transparency. The non-profit citizen advocacy group gave California an “A” grade for the CA.gov state portal which has easy-to-navigate information on the state budget, financial audit reports, state contracts, state official contact information, state taxes, state ethics commission information, public records requests, and registered lobbyists listings and reports.
“I am pleased that California once again received high marks for online transparency,” said Christy Quinlan, Acting Secretary for the California Technology Agency. “Californians have the right to know how their state government operates and where taxpayer dollars are being spent. We are committed to maintaining a high level of transparency and engaging the public to better serve the people of our state.”
Since its inception in 2008, Sunshine Review has analyzed the governmental transparency websites of all 50 states and 6,000 local governments. Grading takes into account the proactive disclosure of information regarding budgets, meetings, elected and administrative officials, permits and zoning, audits, contracts, lobbying, public records, and taxes, as well as the ease of use and availability of information.
